The Lumix GH1 is an exciting new addition to Panasonic’s line-up and the Micro Four Thirds standard. We were very impressed by the Lumix G1, with our two major criticisms being a lack of lenses at launch and an absence of video recording. Both are addressed here with a wide variety of movie modes and the joint launch of the G VARIO 14-140mm super-zoom, along with more details on the G VARIO 7-14mm ultra-wide angle zoom.

The Lumix GH1 wasn’t the only hybrid camera making the news at PMA 2009: Samsung chose to announce its brand new NX-series, which like Micro Four Thirds, dispenses with the mirror and optical viewfinder of a traditional DSLR for all-electronic composition. Again like Micro Four Thirds, it employs interchangeable lenses and a large sensor, although in the case of NX-series cameras, it’s the slightly larger APS-C format
