 HDR PhotoStudio from Unified Color

Unified Color today introduced its innovative new digital imaging software, HDR PhotoStudio, at the Photographer’s Marketing Association (PMA) conference and trade show.

Poised to become the new standard in digital photography, HDR PhotoStudio offers major advances in color modeling, color accuracy and image file compression. With HDR PhotoStudio, photographers can easily merge and edit pictures taken at various exposures into a single, stunning HDR image.

“Our application is backed by a unique color model based on human vision. The issue with just about every color model backing other imaging applications is that it is coupled with an obsolete technology, the CRT (cathode ray tube),” said Igor Tryndin, CTO of Unified Color. “Our color model is decoupled from any physical display device. Instead, we model visual information in terms of how the human eye sees it.”

HDR PhotoStudio has solved the problem of “color shift,” which occurs when color changes (shifts) during adjustments (for example, a change in brightness or contrast). Tryndin points out, “Our unique color model ensures the highest degree of separation between brightness and color in your images. So when you adjust brightness, there is no change in your image’s color.”

An ideal solution for digital archiving, Unified Color’s new BEF file format offers industry-leading file compression, so photographers get the most accurate color, full gamut, HDR images, all in a file comparable to the size of a JPEG. They will also save disk space and experience quicker uploads and downloads.

“With the BEF format you can save HDR images at a quality level that matches any display technology available today, and even those not yet invented,’” said Dr. Sergey Bezryadin, Unified Color’s Chief Scientist. “You can depend on the BEF format for the life of your image because the format of the image is tied to human vision, not a display device that will eventually become outdated, as we have experienced with CRTs. As display technology improves, so too will the quality of your images.”

HDR PhotoStudio is the culmination of many years of research and development, which has resulted in 12 patents awarded to Unified Color and Dr. Bezryadin, a former professor of physics at Moscow University of Electronic Technique.

Photographers can also use HDR PhotoStudio to edit their images, especially when accurate color is required. With its intuitive, easy-to-use editing tools, “Photographers may find themselves, like I did, turning to HDR PhotoStudio to perform brightness and color edits on their images,” said Unified Color Marketing Director (and longtime photographer) Joyce Fee. “At first I used our product just to perform my HDR merges. Then, I experienced how powerful the various editing tools were, and now I manage my color, brightness and contrast adjustments in HDR PhotoStudio instead of Photoshop, where I used to use to make these adjustments.”

For photographers who want to work with Photoshop and also benefit from Unified Color’s file compression ratios, there is BEF Plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop®, so BEF formatted files edited and saved in Photoshop will continue to benefit from Unified Color’s compression ratios and superior quality.

“Ultimately, we want to partner with a camera manufacturer to build an HDR camera based on our technology,” said CTO Tryndin. A true HDR camera would enable anyone with a camera to capture HDR scenes—the lightest and darkest details all captured in one shot. In fact, on February 19th Ricoh™ announced the availability of their new CX1 digital camera with a dynamic range of 12 EV equivalent, an indication that HDR is gaining in popularity outside the realm of professionals and serious hobbyists.

Tryndin’s response to the new CX1: “I’m encouraged. The Ricoh announcement is an obvious manifestation of the HDR transition trend we have been predicting. With the arrival of HDR features to the mass market of digital imaging, the Unified Color platform is a major milestone on this path, as it is a clear, no-compromise choice for any photographer - simply because it matches human vision.”
