Canon G-9 digital compact camera impressions.

After working with the good ol’ d30 , the d20, 5d and having the great 1ds mark II camera since last year, I really wanted to have something compact that didn’t require batteries larger than a pistol magazine and could fit my pockets.

After some research and some testing I opted for the Canon G9 camera.

Why ?

- It has the shooting modes of a dslr camera so I’m used to the basic exposure controls. Av - Tv - P - M

- It has a flash hot-shoe that allows me to use my speedlites, use off-camera flash and not depend on the small thingy attached to the cam.

- I can shoot raw.

- It has a 12 megapixels resolution.Of course it’s not the same image quality as a 5d sensor, but the quality is very decent, specially for a compact camera.

- small !

Nice bonuses are the big LCD screen, the Image Stabilization feature and the video mode with surprising quality and only limited in recording duration to your memory card..

So until a 5d mark II or something comes out I keep the little one in the bag as a back-up and video object along with my old 20d and the 1ds mark II.

Some photos taken with the G9 :

By the time I got back with the 1ds II this scene was gone, so the g9 proved why it was worth the purchase and obliged to come along as much as possible.

The camera’s metering is ok, but like a lot of times a little exposure compensation helps, I underexposed the metering with a stop here.

You don’t want to push the ISO too high with compact cams. While I can shoot assured with the 1ds @ ISO 1600 , I try not to set the g9 higher than ISO 200.There are cheap mini-tripods to help you with this.
