Dramatic Landscapes: Lightroom vs. LightZone.

One the hardest images to make is the dramatic landscape. We have all been there. Great vista, Great sky. Big white clouds, or clouds in a glowering dark mass, or wispy fog…it is often the sky that makes the shot. Who wants an amazing vista with a clear blue sky…nothing to look at in the top half of the image?

Configurator 1.0 in Adobe Photoshop CS 4- Build Your Own Photoshop Panel

Photoshop may be the industry standard — but that covers a lot of industries. So the program’s interface is pretty general. As it has increased in complexity, many of its efficiencies have been hidden. And it can be very difficult to demonstrate any you’ve discovered to coworkers or friends.

Enter Configurator. Adobe will release this utility on Adobe Labs when Creative Suite 4 ships but we got a prelease version to play with. And we went right to work, building two custom panels to handle two tasks we do every day: resize images and retouch them.

Gimp 2.6 released for download.


A new release of the venerable GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is now available for download. Version 2.6 offers a variety of new features, user interface improvements, and is also the first release to include support for the Generic Graphics Library (GEGL), a powerful, graph-based image editing framework.

Lightroom 2: Graduated Filter Tool - draw the viewer into your photos.


One of the great new features in Lightroom 2 is the graduated filter tool. Though simple, It can have a very powerful effect on one’s photos, as we’ll see. From darkening a washed out sky, to emphasising the billowing clouds of stormy sky, the graduated filter tool in Lightroom 2 is incredibly customizable.

The Benefits of Shooting Tethered Into Lightroom.


Even if you’re shooting RAW, the histogram on your camera’s LCD is still derived from JPEG data (think “close but not perfect info”). If you’re exposing so that the histogram is as far as you can to the right without clipping highlights, the LCD on your camera still might be too conservative. The histogram in Lightroom is built on the RAW data and is far more accurate. It’s also a heck of a lot easier to see. Further, you can use the exposure slider in Lightroom to determine the correct exposure setting for your camera.
